Faglige interesser

Heidi Fjeld er utdannet sosialantropolog og er professor i medisinsk antropologi ved Helsam. Gjennom sine studier av sosial organisering blant bønder i Tibet ble hun opptatt av hvordan helse- og medisinske praksiser er tett forbundet med sosiale, kulturelle, økonomiske og politiske sider av folks liv. Sentralt i hennes faglige interesser er på den ene siden, de enorme kulturelle variasjonene i hvordan folk oppfatter kroppers konstitusjon, sykdommers årsaker, god/dårlig helse og relevant behandling, og på den andre siden, hvordan disse forståelsene former og formes av sosialt og religiøst liv. Hennes forskningsinteresser deler seg i tre hovedspor: 1) helse og medisin i Himalaya (Tibet og Nepal), 2) reproduksjonsteknologi i Norge, og 3) helse(tilgang) for transmigranter, dvs. folk som vedvarende bor midlertidig mellom ulike steder. Innenfor Himalaya-antropologien jobber hun med temaer som knytter seg til organisering av sosialt liv, inkludert slektskap, ekteskap, rang og hierarkier, samt tibetansk medisin, kosmologi og buddhisme. Nye prosjekter dreier seg om oppfatninger av helse og helbredelse, særlig omkring reproduktivt liv, i høytliggende fjellområder i Himalaya, steder hvor biomedisinske helsetjenester er svært begrensede. Innenfor reproduksjonsteknologi følger Fjeld praksiser i vår samtid, med særlig interesse i slektskap og familiedannelser. Dette følger av hennes interessere i hvordan medisinsk praksis og teknologi former og formes av kulturelle forståelser.

 

For tiden koordinerer Fjeld Gruppe for praktisk samfunnsmedisin, en tverrfaglig enhet som utvikler aksjonsforskningsprosjekter i tett samarbeid mellom forskere, brukere og ideelle og offentlige tjenesteutøvere. Gruppens hovedfokus er migrasjon, og særlig helse og tilgang til helsetjenester for transmigranter i Oslo.

Bakgrunn

Utdannelse: Fjeld har doktorgraden fra Sosialantropologisk institutt (2007) med avhandingen 'The Rise of the Polyandrous House: Marriage, Kinship and Social Mobility in Rural Tsang, Tibet.' Fra 2007-2012 arbeidet hun som postdok og seniorforsker ved Seksjon for medisinsk anstropologi og medisinsk historie ved Insitutt for Helse og Samfunn (UiO), hvor hun arbeidet med tibetansk medisin, de pågående helsereformene i Kina, HIV og reproduksjon i Malawi, og bioteknologi i Norge. Hun var samtidig gjesteforsker ved Department of Anthropology ved University of California, Berkeley.
