The university shall address global challenges relating to climate change and the environment through research, the provision of environmentally relevant courses of study, and the exercise of sustainable operating practices. Through greater and unified environmental efforts, UiO shall establish itself as a green university, as laid down in the university's strategic plan for 2010 through 2020.

As part of the endeavour to improve the environmental standard of the University of Oslo, the the "Green UiO" project commissioned the UiO carbon audit.
