Holiday settlement

Holiday pay is settled in June, comprising payment of holiday money and deduction from salary for holiday taken.

Holiday money comprises 12 % of the accrual basis for holiday money from the previous year.

If you do not qualify for full entitlement from the previous year, you must submit a report to ensure no deduction is made from your salary.

Employees on a monthly salary

  • All employees registered in the University's salary and personnel system (SAPUiO) as receiving monthly salary in June will be subject to deduction of 5 weeks' salary and will receive payment of holiday money instead.
  • Employees over the age of 60 and who have an accrual basis for holiday money which exceeds 6 times the Norwegian social security base rate (G) (Norwegian) (spk.no) will not receive full compensation for loss of salary during the seventh holiday week. They can choose to take extra holiday only for the days covered by the holiday money (2.3%).
  • Employees who do not wish to take out the full number of holiday days as they have not earned full entitlement with the University of Oslo (and other employers), must immediately submit a report about reduced holiday (odt) to their immediate superior.
  • For part-time employees, the local employer must report the individual employee's working hours to the Pay Section when such employees wish to take individual days of holiday. For employees who have terminated or are due to terminate their employment prior to the end of June and who have already taken holiday, the local employer shall notify the Pay Section of how much holiday they have taken before their final date of employment.
  • Employees who are recruited after the June salary payment has been made and who wish to take out holiday will be subject to a deduction from their salary for the holiday.

Employees with voucher-based salary

  • Employees who receive voucher-based salary will not be paid salary on the days when they take out holiday. Neither do they report hours worked for the days they are on holiday.
  • Employees who have earned holidays and who receive voucher-based salary must take out holiday according to the number of days accrued on a monthly salary.

Payment for holiday not taken due to sickness or maternity/paternity leave

The main rule is that payment cannot be claimed for holiday not taken. Employees may apply to transfer holiday days not taken to the next calendar year. Read more about transferring holiday days.

However, payment for holiday not taken can be claimed on the grounds of sickness or maternity/paternity leave:

  • Employees who have been on 100% sick leave or employees who have taken out maternity/paternity leave and have been prevented from taking their full holiday entitlement before the end of the year may apply for payment of holiday money. Application for the above shall be submitted in writing on the proper paper form (odt). Payment for holiday not taken is made in February of the next year.
  • In the case of sickness, holiday is regarded as taken unless the employee claims postponement of the holiday during the period of sickness absence. Read more about sickness and holiday.
  • When holiday is postponed due to 100% sickness absence, employees are allowed to exceed the maximum number of days for carrying over holidays (14 days) by up to 10 days, provided that an agreement has been reached for normal carrying over of holidays  before the sickness occurred.
