Illness

Government employees have a right to sick pay during illness that is regulated by both law and tariffs. The main rule is that an employee who is reported sick has the right to sickness benefit for up to 49 weeks and 5 days. The first 16 calendar days (the employer period) in each case of absence due to illness is not included.

The starting points for rights to sickness benefit are the Norwegian National Insurance Act and the Norwegian Working Environment Act’s regulations, but these rights are also regulated by the main wage agreement’s common provisions. In certain areas, the main wage agreement provides better conditions with respect to illness than the National Insurance Act.
