Sick leave

Self-certified sick leave

Self-certified sick leave means that you as an employee notify your employer of your unfitness to work due to illness or accident without submitting a medical certificate. To enjoy this right, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must have worked at UiO for at least two months (§ 8-24 of the National Insurance Act).
  • You must not be outside of work or on leave without pay.
  • You must have a general right to sick pay.
  • You must not be on holiday, on partial sick leave or undergoing scaled medical rehabilitation/vocational rehabilitation.
  • After absence on medically certified sick leave for less than 16 calendar days, you must be at work for at least one day before self-certified sick leave may be invoked.

UiO is an Inclusive Workplace Enterprise; this means that you can make use of self-certified sick leave for a total of 24 days during a 12-month period. The self-certified sick leave form may be used for 24 individual days or for various combinations of days, but not for more than eight calendar days for each instance of illness.

For new sick leave within 16 calendar days, previous days of absence for which there is no medical certificate are included. If you have made use of eight days of self-certified sick leave during the 16 calendar days, you must work continuously for 16 calendar days before self-certified sick leave may be invoked again.

If you are ill for more than the 16 calendar days, you must contact your doctor. Self-certified sick leave days that are not covered by a medical certificate from a doctor are considered to be used days of self-certified sick leave.

Medically-certified sick leave

Should you be ill beyond the days allotted for self-certified sick leave, you must contact a doctor (or others who have a right to certify sick leave, for example a chiropractor or physical therapist).

The doctor will make an evaluation of whether there are serious medical reasons for absence from work, for both the first and subsequent sick leaves. Should the doctor feel that sick leave is necessary, partial sick leave shall be considered before active sick leave.

As a UiO employee, when can you make use of sick leave?

  • You must have taken up your position at UiO. This means that you must have shown up for work.
  • You must not be outside of work or on leave without pay.
  • You must not have resigned your position at UiO. If you have resigned your position, you will not have a right to pay on conclusion of the period of notice, even if you should become ill. The same applies should the work contract expire.
  • If you have already been sick for such a long period that the sickness benefit is exhausted, you must have worked continually for 26 weeks (six months) before you can receive sick pay again. During the 26 weeks, absences that amount to fewer than 16 calendar days are ignored.
