Completing the PhD programme

The PhD degree is conferred on the basis of  a satisfactory completion of the educational component, an approved scientific thesis and a satisfactory performance on the PhD examination.

Please note that all details concerning the completion of the PhD programme can be found in the Regulations for the PhD degree at the University of Oslo.

Submission of the thesis

When you have completed the educational component and it is approved by the faculty, you may apply to submit the thesis. If it is approved, i.e. found worthy of defence, you are ready for the PhD examination.

The PhD examination

The PhD examination consists of one or two trial lecture(s) and a public defence of the thesis.

Conferral of the PhD degree

The Rector confers the degree of Philosophiae Doctor of the University of Oslo at a ceremony in the Old Hall. Conferrals usually takes place four times a year, in March, June, September and December. After the ceremony, there is a reception in Domus Bibliotheca.
