Wind power offers sustainable and emission-free power. However, like all other energy technologies, wind power has an impact on the societies and the natural environment where it is located. Impact on landscape, birds, reindeer farming, tourism and outdoor life are common challenges. At the same time, wind power could offer jobs and income for municipalities facing outward migration and budget constraints. Planning of wind power is a multi-professional task, and several specialists are involved in the assessment of a number of issues ranging from meteorology to electrical and mechanical engineering, biology, social impact, legal issues, economics and more. In this presentation, Trond Gärtner from Statkraft will by exemplifying from experiences, give some insights into the process of developing wind power projects; how suitable areas are identified and how different interests are being considered during the planning phase. Furthermore, some perspectives on the future role of wind power and Norway’s potential role in a Europe with a significant higher share of renewables will be presented. We will in the seminar discuss corporate responsibility issues and ethics related to wind power,  especially in projects which turns out to be controversial.
