Leave of absence or part-time studies
In some situations, you may need to apply for a leave of absence from your studies, or you may need to study part-time for a while. You may need maternity/paternity leave, have to complete your military service or be ill for a longer period.
Who can apply for a leave of absence?
All students with the right to study in a study programme can apply for a leave of absence, but there are conditions attached to when an application can be made and how long a leave of absence can be.
The faculties have different rules for what gives grounds for a leave of absence. Examples of conditions that can give grounds for a leave of absence:
- Birth and adoption (parental leave)
- Illness
- Compulsory military service or compulsory civilian national service
- Major care-giving tasks
Who can apply for part-time studies?
All students with the right to study in a study programme can apply to study part-time, but there are conditions attached to when an application can be made, and how long the period of part-time studies can be.
Application deadlines
The application deadlines for most study programmes are
- 1 September for the autumn semester.
- 1 February for the spring semester.
Medicine, odontology and nutrition studies and the study programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences have their own application deadlines.
If a need for part-time studies should arise after the deadline, you must send the application as soon as possible after the need arises.

Semester registration and access to the IT services during leave of absence
- Students on leave from studies at UiO will not pay the semester fee or register for the semester as long as they are on leave. Students on maternity leave may choose to pay the semester fee and register for the semester.
- Access to the IT services at UiO will be blocked if you do not register for the semester. If you wish to see e-mails that are sent to your UiO address during your period of leave, you must set up a forwarding e-mail address via the Brukerinfo service before your access is blocked.
