Semester abroad

As a student at the University of Oslo you may choose to take parts of your degree at a university abroad. You can find more information here: Exchange opportunities at UiO and courses abroad .

A number of exchange programmes apply to postgraduate students; a summary, organised according to country, is available here . We have specific recommendations for official exchange agreements in different fields of study. Please refer to information on exchange opportunities specific to your subject. You should discuss any plans with a relevant contact person/supervisor/programme leader.

Please note that the deadline for applications for exchange programmes abroad via an official exchange agreement is generally either 15/2 or 15/9. It is not usually possible to take part in an exchange programme during the first semester of your master’s degree. If you choose the long thesis option for your degree, it would be unadvisable to travel abroad during Semester 3 or 4; an exchange period should take place in Semester 2 of your course. This means that it should be planned soon after you start your Master’s studies. If you opt for a programme with a short thesis, it may be possible to study abroad during Semester 2 or 3. Applications should be made one semester ahead of time, that is, at the beginning of Semester 1 or Semester 2. If you are considering this, please discuss it with the programme leader or your supervisor. Any courses you take abroad must be accredited and integrated into your Master’s Degree Agreement on your return to Oslo University.

Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to write your master’s thesis abroad. If so, you must be assigned a supervisor at the foreign university, and if this person is not employed by UiO, you must also have an internal UiO supervisor. This must be approved in advance as part of your Master’s Degree Agreement.
