Rules issued by the Programme Board of the MSc programme Geosciences
The rules issued by the Programme Board of the MSc programme Geosciences at the University of Oslo complement the Regulations concerning courses, modules and degrees at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, and regulations regarding studies at the University of Oslo as described in the regulations handbook (in Norwegian only).
Pre study plan and study plan deadlines
The pre-study plan must be handed in to the Programme board no later than September 15th or February 15th in the first semester of the master's studies.
The study plan must be handed in to the Programme Board no later than March 15th or October 15th in the second semester of the master's studies.
Completed credits prior to admission to the MSc programme Geosciences
The main rule is that all courses in the theoretical syllabus in the master's degree are supposed to be completed as part of the master's studies, and hence after admission to the MSc programme is granted. A student can apply to have a maximum of 30 credits completed prior to admission to the MSc programme included in the theoretical syllabus, by sending an application to the programme board.
The application has to be signed by the student and by the supervisor or subsequently by the contact person for the study dicsipline.
Special syllabus
Application for approval of special syllabus must be sent to the Programme board as soon as it is decided upon and before the exam in the special syllabus is held. It is important that the Programme board is given enough time to be able to handle the application before the exam is held. For special syllabus giving 10 credits, the syllabus must include a minimum of 250 pages from artivles, or a minimum of 350 pages from books. Accordingly special syllabus giving 5 credits must include a minimum of 125 pages from articles, and 175 pages from books.
The syllabus must be approved by the student's supervisor, or the contact person for the study discipline if a supervisor is not yet appointed
The form has to be signed by the student, the course responsible and the supervisor/contact person.

Expense refund related to the MSc thesis
Students at the MSc programme Geosciences at the University of Oslo can apply to get expenses up to NOK 10.000 regarding field work, lab work and similar which is directly related to work with the master’s thesis refunded. Expenses regarding equipment like compass, shovel, etc, and to cover expenses indirectly related to work with the master’s thesis are not covered.
All students who wish to apply for an expense refund has to do so prior to the field work, lab work etc is taking place. The application must state what type of expenses and the approximate amount of the expense the student applies to have refunded. All receipts have to be kept as original receipts are required by the pay section.
Deferred thesis submission
Applications for deferred thesis submission must be sent to the Programme Board no later than 1 month before the submission date for the thesis. Valid reasons for deferment are stated in the Regulations concerning courses, modules and degrees, section 3.3.4.
