Activities during the study start
Welcome to all new students at the master programme in Geosciences!
On this page you will find important information about the activities at the Department during the first weeks of the semester.
Monday 7 January – Information meeting
On Monday January 7 at 09:00 AM, there will be a mandatory information meeting for all new master students. The meeting will be held in Auditorium 1 in the Geology building. There will be information about:
- Important rules and deadlines for master students at the Department of Geosciences
- How to get a student card and pay the semester fee
- How to register for courses in StudentWeb
- You’ll also get to meet the head of the Department, the master programme coordinators and the student advisors
The information meeting and the subsequent lectures are mandatory for all new master students. If you have problems making it to Oslo in time, you must contact us at studieinfo (at) geo.uio.no or phone: +47 22 85 66 49 and let us know.
If we do not hear from you, and you do not show up for the meeting, you will lose your study right at the programme.

Thursday 10 January - Main deadline for course registration
This is the deadline for signing up for courses for the spring semester. You sign up using StudentWeb.
Are you not sure which courses to sign up for? See “Programme structure” for the programme option you are assigned to, on your master programme’s web page, or contact the master programme coordinator for your study discipline:

Monday 15 January - Courses with vacant places open for further registration
If you yet haven’t signed up for courses for the spring semester, you can register for applicable courses among those that still have vacant slots from January 15 through February 1.
Week 2 - Introduction days
During week 2 (7-11. January) there will be some general lessons on how to search for literature, how to write a Master`s thesis etc. A detailed schedule will be presented the first day. All activities these days are compulsory.
In week 2 will there also be a mandatory lab satety course, fire, firstaid, and field safety courses for students attending the diciplines:
- Environmental geology and geohazards
- Petroleum geology and petroleum geophysics
- Geology
Week 3/4 - Lectures commence
During this weeks, the lectures in most of the courses start up. See the course semester page for time and place for the first lecture. All courses at the Department of Geosciences have mandatory attendance on the first lecture.
If you have problems making it to the first lecture, you must give notice to the lecturer ahead of time. You find the contact information for each lecturer on the course semester page, under the link “Administration and teachers”.
Friday February 1 – Deadline day
This date is the deadline for many important registrations. These deadlines will be strictly enforced, so make sure you have completed all the requirements below:
- Semester registration, including registration for courses and exams and confirming your study plan (if applicable). All this is done in StudentWeb.
- Application for special facilities for your exams (if applicable)
- Contacting the Department about exams being given in English
- Contacting the Department about using a dictionary for your exams
- Handing in the master pre-agreement form (pre-study plan) to the Studies administration *

* Master students in the 2. semester have to hand in the master study plan by March 15 to the Studies administration.
