Special admission requirements
I. Educational qualifications
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration OR have a minimum of 180 ECTS credits including in-depth study of one of the following subjects: law, nautical science, logistics, economics, insurance or engineering.
Relevant educational backgrounds for applicants to the programme are:
- LL.B or equivalent
- LL.M or equivalent
- Cand.scient/master’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree specialising in one of the following subjects: nautical studies, logistics, finance, insurance or engineering
- Minimum 180 ECTS specialising in one of the following subjects: nautical studies, logistics, finance, insurance, engineering or law.
The applicant needs a minimum average level of C or equal from previous education at university level to qualify for the programme. In addition, in order to be evaluated for admission, applicants must fulfil the basic entrance requirements for Norwegian Universities(generell studiekompetanse: "GSK").

II. Proficiency in English
Applicants who are not native speakers of English must document their proficiency in the English language prior to admission.
Applicants who are not native speakers need to document their proficiency in English either by:
a) 5 hours of English from the first year of Norwegian high school education with the grade 4 or better, or to have passed English course I or II from the second or third year of the Norwegian high school education.
b) A TOEFL-test: Score have to be of minimum 213 (computer-based test (CBT)), 550 (Paper-based test (PBT)) or 80 (Internet-based test (iBT)),
c) An IELTS-test: Score of minimum 6.0.

III. Work experience
You need to have been employed full-time for a minimum of two years in a relevant field.
What is regarded as relevant working experience?
This requirement will be interpreted broadly to include employment in shipping companies, insurance companies, P&I clubs, law firms, insurance brokers, maritime authorities, risk consultants, classification societies, charterers etc.
Ranking of applicants
Applicants are ranked based on individual assessment. Each application is assessed on the basis of marks, composition of the degree, relevant professional experience, proficiency in English and suitability for the programme. Please note that we put emphasis on what you write in the motivation letter.

The Admissions Committee at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law is responsible for deciding on the applications.

Recognition of prior education
If you have previous education from the University of Oslo or from another higher education institution, you may apply for specific recognition of this education as part of your degree. Education from both Norwegian and foreign higher education institutions may be recognised. Recognition depends upon whether the education meets the specific requirements of your degree.
