Learning Goals and Learning Outcome

The Master of Arts (MA) in Risk Management and Marine Insurance (RMMI) aims to provide the analytical tools necessary to minimize costs connected to risk and maximize safety at sea. The goal is to establish an understanding of how to reach an optimal balance between technical and organizational safety measures to avoid risk, and financial devices like marine insurance to finance the risk factors that cannot be avoided.

The concept of risk is analyzed from a technical, organizational, economic and legal point of view in order to identify, evaluate and manage the risks involved.

Identification of risk in the shipping industry is first and foremost a technical and organizational issue. The main focus will be the basic issues relating to the safety at sea. The approach is based on the theoretical and practical approaches to risk analysis of maritime and technical systems.

The programme will seek to provide students with know-how and competence that are both up-to-date and easily applicable in everyday work situations.

As this Master of Arts programme includes technical, organizational, financial and legal issues it is not possible to require full master levels in all three subjects in relation to method. It can therefore not be required that the candidate shall be able to handle technical and financial calculation and legal interpretation on master level. Rather, the master level is obtained through the ability to read and recognize different parts of the total risk management process and to see what kind of expertise is needed to analyze the different types of problems further.

The RMMI programme is completed by writing a master thesis. Writing a thesis gives a genuine possibility to specialize and concentrate on selected issues within the topics the four mandatory courses covers, based on the student’s own interests and work situation. Since the programme is a multidisciplinary course, it is required that the students try to have a multidisciplinary approach in their thesis. Writing the master thesis is an opportunity to train the skills in comparative analyses.

Target group

The RMMI-programme is designed for practitioners in the field of marine insurance and other risk-related sectors in the maritime industry.
