Renewal of student residence permit

Non-EU/EEA-students who will be staying in Norway for more than one year must remember to apply for renewal of their residence permit at least one month before the residence permit expires.

Apply for renewal of residence permit

  1. Check the requirements and register an application for renewal of residence permit (udi.no)
  2. Pay the UDI application fees
  3. Book an appointment with the Oslo Police Department in order to hand in your documents
  4. Order a progress report

Due to the waiting time we recommend that you register the Application 3 months before your residence permit expires.

If you have received an F-code by sms or e-mail you can fast-track the renewal of your residence permit. If you have questions about the F-code, please contact UDI.

Information needed when applying:

The progress report is a statement on your:

  • study progression
  • part-time work permit

Order a progress report

Please note that the part-time work permit is not automatically renewed, and you must document satisfactory progress in your studies in order to continue to work part-time.

Delayed in your studies?

If you are delayed you must contact your faculty/programme to apply for extension of your study right. The report cannot be issued without an extended study right.

When and where to collect the progress report

  • June/July if your permit expires in August
  • January if your permit expires in February

The progress report will be issued when all exams for the semester is registered in our database. You will receive an e-mail when the report can be collected at Knutepunktet - International Student Reception.

Admission to a new study programme

If you have been admitted to a new study programme at a higher level (from bachelor to master), this will be deemed to be a continuation of previous studies by UDI. In addition to the progress report (or transcript of records) you will be asked to document:

  • Admission to the new study programme
  • Completion of the previous previous study programme

Second master's degree programme

If you have been admitted to a new study programme at the same level as the previous programme (through UiOmaster) this will in general NOT be deemed to be a continuation by UDI.

Please be aware of that UDI will only grant renewal of residence permit as an exemption, and require that you can document:

  • Admission to the new study programme
  • Completion of your previous study programme, without too much delay
  • Statement that the new study programme can be deemed to be a continuation of previous studies, and increase the chances of being accepted to a doctoral degree programme (or work as a researcher)

Ask your study programme/faculty for confirmation/verification

Please note that the study programme can only issue a statement if they can consider the new study programme to be a continuation. They are not obliged to issue such a statement.

Important notice:

Students who have completed a bachelor's degree in Norway will in general not be granted renewal of a residence permit to start another bachelor’s degree programme.
