English requirements

Native English speakers from the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand do not need to document their English skills. Otherwise, applicants must document their English proficiency in one of the following ways: 

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

You need a minimum score of

  • 500 points on the paper-based test (PBT)
  • 170 for a computer-based test (CBT)
  • 60 points on the internet-based test (IBT)

Please send your score directly to the ISS and use TOEFL code 5695. Otherwise, you must submit a certified copy of your score.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 

You need a minimum score of 5.0.

University of Cambridge exams

  • First Certificate in English
  • Certificate in Advanced English
  • Certificate of Proficiency in English

Advanced Placement International English Language exam (APIEL)

You need a minimum score of 3.

Proof of secondary education completed in English

Candidates from the following countries meet the requirement by presenting a secondary school diploma from an english-speaking school:

Botswana
Cameroon
Gambia (the)
Ghana
Kenya
Malawi
Nigeria
Sierra Leone
South Africa
Swaziland
Tanzania
Uganda
Zambia
Zimbabwe

 

ISS will also accept the following

  • Proof of A-level examinations in English
  • Transcripts of a completed Bachelor degree with English as the language of instruction
  • Transcripts of a completed Bachelor degree where English comprised the main course of study
  • Transcripts of a completed Bachelor degree in English language/literature
  • Transcripts from EU/EEA or UNESCO-Cepes member states documenting English as the main foreign language in post-elementary education, i.e. 7 years of English classes in lower and upper secondary schools
  • A signed and stamped statement from a current employer or professor indicating your proficiency in English, with contact information
  • Transcripts from Norwegian Videregåendeskole ‘engelsk grunnkurs’ with a mark of 2 or better
  • Transcripts showing you have completed one year of instruction at a university in USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand
  • Transcripts of completed secondary education in the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or in one of the Nordic countries
