Bergen – West Coast Art & History, July 11-15
On this five-day long excursion you will see scenic fjords, large waterfalls, beautiful valleys, the Hansa city of Bergen and many historical places in and around Bergen.
For an added fee, students can take a five-day excursion to Bergen on the west coast. Students learn about the art, history and development of this important city & region.
Schedule and accommodation are subject to change.
NOTE: Students in the course ISSSUM4180 are going on a field trip this weekend and cannot participate in the excursion to Bergen.
Departure from Oslo on Wednesday, July 11, after lunch (14:00).
The bus leave from Blindern Dormitory and will be parked in Problemveien between the portal entrance to Blindern Dormitory and Lucy Smiths hus (no. 1). Buses leave promptly, and will not wait for latecomers!
Where do we go?
Our first stop is Geilo where we spend the night.The next day we travel to Bergen.
Thursday we travel on a fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen which is an beautiful area featured on the UNESCO world heritage list. Here you will experience waterfalls and steep mountains which reaches 1800 meters above sea level. Before we continue our trip to Bergen, we will take a stop at Tvindefossen - a waterfall near Voss.
The two days spent in Bergen (Friday and Saturday) include several visits to places of cultural and historical interest: city sightseeing and a ride with the funicular “Fløibanen” for an overview of Bergen.
On Saturday you will get free time to experience the city on your own, or you can join the leaders for a trip to the top of Ulrikken by a cable car, which is the highest mountain in Bergen and a unique landmark. During the free time on Saturday each student must buy entrance tickets to museums and cultural institutions including Ulrikken themselves, these tickets are not included in the fee. Bergen is a city characterized by culture and urban life surrounded by mountains and fjords. You can find several museums and cultural institutions in the centre of Bergen, for example The Bergen Aquarium or Kode Art Museums of Bergen. Another alternative is to take a nice walk in the Nordnes public park, visit the fish marked or Skostredet.
On Sunday we leave for Oslo.
The excursion to Bergen is an additional excursion of NOK 4150/USD 560. The fee includes transportation, accommodation, meals (drinks not included) and visits to all the attractions.

Cancellations have to be made at the latest on Monday June 18. After that date the fee for the Bergen excursion cannot be refunded.
Family members and friends of ISS students are welcome participate in the excursion for an additional fee of NOK 4250, space permitting. Children under the age of 18 cannot participate in the excursion. Sign up guests by sending an email to the Excursions Manager, firstname.lastname@example.org.
