Integrating E-Lectures in the Teaching of Nutrition
Andrew Collins, Giske Ursin og Torgrim Langleite
Summary
E-lectures have been introduced into the non-clinical parts of the 6th semester Molecular, cellular and clinical nutrition course ERN 3120, covering the topics: Vitamin D, Minerals and trace elements, and Nutrition and cancer. To varying extents, the lectures were constructed from existing PowerPoint presentations, or de novo from material provided by the lecturer responsible for the topic in the past.
The e-lectures have been presented to the students, and their responses noted. E-lectures cannot stand alone, but need additional input from teachers in the form of tutorials or seminars. An important issue
that has emerged is the need for on-line self-testing and monitoring of progress through the course, and for more thorough assessment through assignments that may be completed on-line and are then sent to the teacher for marking.
A major pedagogical feature of e-lectures is the development of a horizontal or networked model for learning, in place of the traditional linear model. Thus, e-lectures, with links to each other and to external web-sites, give enormous potential for fi nding and using information when it is required, rather than when the lecturer decides to give it. The implications of this innovation remain to be explored and exploited.
