The purpose of this workshop is to investigate the rhetoric that reaches beyond the human sphere. If humans are perhaps the only species capable of rhetoric, they are certainly not the only species affected by it.

What does it mean to live a good life in a time when the human population keeps on growing, the oil age is coming to an end, the climate is changing, the oceans are turning more acidic, fish populations are declining, and fertile soils the world over are eroding?
With Sarah Whatmore, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on relations between people and the material world, particularly the living world, and the spatial habits of thought that inform the ways in which these relations are imagined and practiced in the conduct of science, governance and everyday life.

Velkommen til en utstilling av og med forskningsprosjektet Dyr som ting og dyr som tegn. I forskningsfeltet Animal Studies studerer man de mange måtene som kultur og samfunn påvirker forholdet vårt til andre dyrearter på. Utstillingen tar sikte på å løfte fram hvordan dyr blir gjort til ting, ’matter’, og å vise hvordan tingliggjøringen av dyr angår og berører oss, ’matters’.
The climate and climate change have become a dominant way of understanding nature during the past decades. Understanding how human activity is causing climate change, and how these climate changes in turn prompt changes in human ways of life, are issues that engage scholars across both the natural and the social sciences.
Scholars within the natural sciences are not the only scholars who study, analyze and write about nature. So do also scholars within the social sciences and the humanities. But how is this done? And what is this thing called "nature"?

Nature and the natural seminar (14.03.12): Natural scientists are not the only scholars studying, analysing and writing about nature: So do also scholars within the disciplines of the social sciences and the humanities. But how is this done? "Writing nature" is the topic for this spring's seminar series organised by the Kultrans research group Nature and the Natural. Representatives from various disciplines are invited to present and discuss with us. This Wednesday the turn has come to science and technology studies (STS).
- Hvordan skriver antropologer natur? Det er ikke så lenge siden antropologiske tilnærminger til natur begrenset seg til naturforståelsen hos mindre menneskegrupper, deres forhold til dyr og det umiddelbare miljøet. Selv om disse tilnærmingene fremdeles gir viktige innsikter, må de i dag settes inn i nye sammenhenger, og antropologer må forholde seg til større, mer komplekse virkeligheter enn dem som man får tilgang til gjennom tradisjonelle landsbystudier.
