Writing of the Master's Thesis:
The master’s thesis is an independent scientific product. Through the work on the master’s thesis, the student should demonstrate the ability to analyse a specific topic in an original and meaningful fashion. The student should demonstrate a mastry of relevant theory and/or literature, carry out empirical research and write a scholarly treatise that encapsulates the approach and the results.

All thesis must be delivered in a set format and lay-out. When you write your thesis you can save valuable time if you structure it by using the guidelines and the template provided by SUM from the beginning.

SUM Layout Guidlines

DUO has published a set of very detailed instructions on how to work with styles and layout, which can with advantage be used as a supplement to the information presented above.

Printing and submitting the thesis:
The thesis is to be completed and submitted by 1st May. The oral exams are held in period from 20th May to 20th June. The thesis is to be completed and submitted by 2nd May. The oral exams are held in period from 20th May to 20th June. If you are unable to complete and submit the master’s thesis within the deadline determined by the department, you may apply for an extra semester (applies only for students who were admitted Autumn 2010 or later). Application procedure and form is available here

There are five steps to follow when submitting the thesis:

1. Make a pdf-file from the thesis and from the cover page. You will receive a word template for the cover page from the student consultant in good time before the handing-in deadline.

2. Send the two pdf files (the front page and the thesis) by e-mail to Reprosentralen. Make sure that you cc the current Study Consultant at SUM in the e-mail, as this will constitute the evidence of handing in your thesis in time. You are yourself responsible for printing out the thesis in pdf format and revising that it looks fine before e-mailing it. Reprosentralen should have received an order ("rekvisisjon") by the Study Consultant with your name on it.

Any colored photoes in the thesis are at your own expense. SUM covers 10 copies: 5 are kept at SUM, and 5 are for the student. Any additional copies are payed by the student and should be agreed directly with Reprosentralen.

3. Register your thesis in Duo : DUO is the University's system for electronic publications. You must submit the thesis in full text, as well as an abstract of the thesis. This ensures that your thesis will be available on the Internet. The process of publishing your thesis is explained on the DUO web pages. However, when you log in to Duo it is very important that you choose "andre enheter" (Norwegian log-in page) or "Centres at the University" (English page) as your faculty - because if you choose "Humanities" there, we will not find your thesis in order to make it visible on the internet after your oral exam. After logging in, you choose "Senter for Utvikling og Miljø" or "Centre for Development and the Environment" in the drop-down window.

When you register the thesis or abstract, you will come directly to a receipt, which should be printed out and signed. On this same page is the link to declaration of sources, which you also print out.

4. Fill in the Form for submission of Master´s Thesis that the student consultant will send you. The form can also be found at norwegian english

OBS! When filling out the form: Your master programme is Culture, Environment and Sustainability if you started the fall semester 2010 or later, and it is Culture and Ideas, or Kultur-og Idéstudier, and studieretning/programme option Culture, Environment and Sustainability if you started on the master previous to 2010.

5. You should now have three forms filled out, all of which should be delivered to the current study consultant at SUM.

The three forms are:
1. Receipt for registration in DUO
2. Declaration of sources
(both printed from the DUO webpage)
3. Form for submission of Master´s Thesis/issuing Master´s certificate.

When the above forms are delivered to the study consultant at SUM, you have delivered your thesis! Congratulations! As soon as the thesis is printed out and delivered at SUM by reprosentralen, we will notify you. The Director of the Master programme and your supervisor will find the sensors for your thesis, and a date for your oral exam will be set.
