AAS4900 - International Project Term in Asia and Africa

Course content

The Master student will for one term be associated with an institution (organisation, office or company) in the area relevant to the student’s Master programme, such as a Norwegian embassy or consulate, a company or a voluntary organisation. The course will constitute the third term of a 2-year work-related Master in the Asian and African Studies Programme and will give the student professional experience within his or her chosen field of study and area. In practical terms, the student’s time will be divided between tasks for the institution and his or her own writing of a project report. The report will normally be of relevance to the institution’s field of activity and needs. The theme of the report will be decided upon in collaboration between the institution, the student and the student’s supervisor at the University of Oslo. A supervisor will be identified by the student’s department.

The course can only be offered to the student if a relevant institution is found and the institution can accommodate the student during the term that fits the student’s course programme. The institution may decide on its own procedures – including interviews – before agreeing or accepting the individual student.

In addition to openings organised by the Asian and African Studies Programme, students are encouraged to contact relevant institutions themselves.

Admission

Only students admitted to the Master Programme for Asian and African Studies can apply. The International Project Term must fit as the third term of the student’s Master degree. Admission is limited by available openings. You can yourself organise an agreement, subject to approval by the Programme. You can only be admitted if a relevant institution in the area of your specialisation is found and agrees upon cooperation. It is the institution itself which will have the final word regarding acceptance or not.

To apply you fill out the application form (only available in Norwegian) and write a one-page individual application, and attach your CV and exam transcript. All papers should be in English. Application deadlines are 1 September of the previous year for the spring term and 15 February for the autumn term. Applications should be sent to the Asian and African Studies Programme.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

Successful examination totalling 60 credits in the first two terms of your Master’s degree in the Asian and African Studies Programme.

Teaching

You will receive supervision in Fronter or by e-mail. You should hand in an outline and drafts to the supervisor for guidance and comments.

Exam information

New assessment requirements from autumn 2008:

Students must write one or more reports during their period of study, as a part of the master’s programme. A lengthy report of 20 pages is to be compiled, or two to three reports which together make up a minimum of 20 pages.

UiO, the individual student, and the external contractor must decide in mutual consultation what the topic(s) of the report(s) should be. The contractor decides whether there should be one, two or three reports. UiO has the academic responsibility for assuring the quality of the topic proposal and for the content of the report(s), plus the continuous academic follow-up.

12-18 hours per week are to be set aside for writing of the report(s).

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .
