NORINT0113 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 3

Course content

Great emphasis on oral activity. Work on fundamental features of Norwegian phonetics/phonology. Grammar: placing and meaning of expressions of modality, negation in subordinate clause, verbs (future tense, pluperfect, passive voice), nominal phrases, comparative expressions. Topics/vocabulary: vocabulary related to specific fields of study, work/leisure time, characteristics of Norwegian culture, health.

This is a language course with a final exam.

Learning outcome

Students should be able to understand oral presentations on topics from everyday life and talk about these with a simple vocabulary and in a simple, concrete way. Pronunciation should be good enough not to hinder communication. They should be able to read textbooks and equivalent texts covering topics from everyday life. They should be able to write about topics covered in the course and express their own thoughts and opinions, even if their language is elementary. They should also master the basic rules of Norwegian grammar covered in the course.

Admission

This subject is open to international students at the University of Oslo, and students who have been admitted to attend Norwegian courses. International students will get information about how to sign up for courses when they arrive in Norway. Persons who are not students at UiO, can apply for admission to Norwegian courses here

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Students must be eligible for matriculation and must have passed course NORINT0112 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 2 (discontinued) or equivalent.

Teaching

NORINT 0113 consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction. More and more teaching will be given in Norwegian as the course progresses.Written assignments are to be handed in each teaching day. For students wishing a higher progression, an intensive course over one semester covering NORINT0110 – Norwegian for International Students, Level 1 (NORINT0111 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 1 (discontinued), NORINT0112 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 2 (discontinued) and NORINT0113 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 3 (discontinued)) and NORINT0120 – Norwegian for International Students, Level 2 is offered. The intensive course consists of 12 hours of classroom instruction pr week for 14 weeks.

Only students who are placed in a class are allowed in the class room.

NB! All Norwegian courses have obligatory attendance of 75% of the lessons.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Written homework is corrected and evaluated by the course teacher, who also evaluates students’ participation and oral performance in class. Each student is to give an oral presentation in class during the latter part of the course. For the last two hours of the course, a written 3-hour test will be given. Both the oral presentation and the written test will be awarded a letter grade (A-F with A as best pass and F as fail). The presentation and the written test both count 50% each toward the final grade, and they both have to be passed in order to receive a passing final grade. For those who follow the intensive course, the final written test is a three hour long test.

Maximum 20 students per class. The number of classes varies each semester.

NORINT0113 – Norwegian for international students, level 1, part 3 (discontinued) offers credits to exchange students and is also the last third of a complete level 1. Moreover, level 1 is the first of a total of three courses that international students accepted as regular degree students are required to take.

Norwegian courses up to a maximum of 40 credits, can be used as part of a degree at the University of Oslo for international students.
