ENG2100 – Advanced English Grammar: Syntax and argumentation

Course content

The course will deepen your insight into English grammar and the linguistic analysis of English. There is a focus on syntactic description and argumentation, and on the relationship between syntax and semantics. Particular attention will be given the forms and functions of the noun phrase and the verb phrase.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will:

  • be able to think analytically about English syntax
  • have in-depth knowledge of the English verb phrase
  • have in-depth knowledge of the English noun phrase
  • be able to explain grammatical structures of the English language and argue for your analysis

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course requires ENG1100 – English Grammar or similar knowledge.

Teaching

Seminar, 2 hours per week for 14 weeks.

Course requirements, obligatory attendance in at least 11 of 14 seminars. Absences beyond 3 group sessions must be justified by documentation given to the exam coordinator.

Two obligatory assignments, the first of which is a short essay related to course reading and the second containing a linguistic analysis.

Examination

The final exam is a 4-hour written exam.

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
