Course content

The course gives a brief introduction to research methods and offers insights into the process of writing a paper in the form of styles, referencing, punctuation and other important aspects of writing.
The students will write a 10-page essay on a chosen topic. The essay will be based on material studied in a 2000-level course in English literature, preferably taken in the same semester as ENG3300. The essay topic or research question will be arrived at in consultation with the teacher of the 2000-level course
A guided session in the University library is an integral part of the course.

After completing this course you will have:

  • specialized in an area within English literature;
  • trained your ability to select, limit and question a particular topic;
  • learned how to use library resources;
  • trained your skills in presenting your thesis.

Admission

This course is not for students with "enkeltemnestudierett".

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge

It is recommended that you attend this course in your last semester.

Teaching

There will be six hours of seminars in the beginning of the semester, an obligatory library-tour and six hours of seminars in the middle of the semester where you present your draft.

Students are entitled to some individual supervision from the teacher during the semester.

Mandatory course-work: In order to submit the final essay, all students must present and have their work approved in group presentation sessions.

Attendance is an obligatory class requirement (80%).

Exam information

The final exam consists of a paper of 10 standard pages that must be submitted within a given deadline.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
