ENG4413 - The Early English Novel

Course content

During the course we will study five works that cover the first century or so of the development of the novel in Britain. The course will focus on important elements in the development of the novel from romance, epistolary novel, travel literature, to the romantic-realistic novel. The emphasis will be on textual analysis and on the acquisition of knowledge about the social, political and cultural context.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Admission to the course is required. Students outside the literature program must have at least 20 sp English literature, language or civilisation.

Teaching

The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
Half-way through the semester there is a period of one (autumn term) or two (spring term) reading weeks without teaching, to be used for individual study and work on assignments.
Attendance is mandatory (min. 80%)

Examination

Students will give an oral presentation on a given topic to be able to take the exam. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. The exam consists of a term paper of abt. 10 standard pages which potentially can form the basis for an MA dissertation.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Withdrawal from an examination

A student may sit this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do so in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit the exam.

Special examination arrangements

If you have a disability or a health problem that entails significant inconvenience in an examination situation, you may be considered for special examination arrangements. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
