Course content

The Master’s Degree thesis is considered a scientific investigation of a theoretical or empirical kind; it represents an independent piece of research, carried out under supervision.

Learning outcomes

The work on the Master’s Degree thesis is intended to provide research competence in and insight into problematic issues and methods of work in media science. The writing of the thesis provides students with training in developing research projects from original idea to fully completed research report in the form of a Master’s Degree dissertation. The student will learn how to critically evaluate research and to present his or her own research to others. This course of study prepares students for further analytical work and Ph.D. studies.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Mainly individual supervision (or supervision in groups). Students will receive 15 hours of supervision throughout the work with the Master's Thesis. Supervision is mandatory. Ground rules for MA-supervision

Students starting their master's studies autumn 2010 or later: During the third or fourth semester of the master's program, students will have to participate in a mandatory seminar focusing on the writing process and evaluating the work on the thesis so far. Further information about the seminar is given at the start of the semester, cf. the semester website.

Before the examination of the master's thesis can take place, the student must give a trial lecture or presentation of the thesis, to be approved by the committee evaluating the thesis. The lecture will be a presentation of the master's thesis (such as central findings, presentation of selected cases, the methods in use etc.) lasting up to 30 minutes. This presentation is open for all, and is held immediately before the oral examination by the committee.

Teaching takes place throughout the semester.

Criteria for access to teaching resources

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.

Exam information

The Master’s Degree thesis is a dissertation of up to 100 pages. In addition, 3 copies of additional material should be submitted (film etc.) A commission composed of one internal examiner and one external examiner assesses the thesis. An oral examination of up to 1 hour may adjust the final grade.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .
