Course content
The course will treat new important developments in fish ecology, based on recently published primary literature. A general textbook will function as a background for discussion of various subjects. The subjects will differ among years, depending on developments in the literature.
Learning outcomes
To update the participants on fish ecology issues of high contemporary interest, and to develop the participants ability to understand important processes affecting individuals, populations and species. The focus is upon critical analysis.

Prerequisites
Recommended prior knowledge
MNLAB0020 - Introduction to laboratory and field safety Bachelor's Degree in Biology or equivalent. Good basic knowledge of ecology.
Overlap
5 credits against BIO4370 - Fish ecology.
Teaching
The participants will be exposed to lectures on general topics as well as seminars describing ongoing research by local staff or guests. Further, each participant will:
- present and discuss one scientific paper
- write an essay on a given topic
- at the end of the course there will be given a 4 days project at the field station in Drøbak. A report from this research project has to be delivered within a given deadline.
The students have to pay a field course fee of 150 NOK per day.
This subject use Fronter. Until the start of the semester, information will be given on the semester page of the subject.
Exam information
The presentation of an article, the essay and the report from the researchprogram in addition to an oral exam. The first three parts have to be passed to take the oral exam.
Assessment and grading
The presentation of an article and the scientific report is graded pass/fail. Essay and final oral exam is graded (A-F). The essay counts 30% and the final oral exam counts 70%, on the final grade.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .
Explanations and appeals
Students can request an explanation of their grades, and can also appeal against their grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors. Read more about explanations and appeals
Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes
You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .
Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Exam options for students with special needs
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Evaluation of this course
