Course content

The course provides knowledge and expertise in various fresh water systems. We will review published articles about lakes in Norway and Fennoscandinavia, and selected lakes and water systems from other parts of the world as comparison, such as deep African (“rift valley”) and tropical lakes, Balaton, the Baikal lake, Endordeiske and steam/salt lakes, The Great Lakes, lakes on the Canadian Precambrian shield, Russian lakes, crater lakes in Japan, USA and more. During the year, a review of appropriate lakes will be treated theoretically, and empirical background for special phenomena, as for example termic walls in great lakes, change in temperatures for maximum density, sedimentology and diagenesis, meromixis.and the importance of such processes in an ecological perspective. Field course minimum 1 week*.

Learning outcomes

The course will provide students with insight and a general overview into the natural state of lakes, for among other things, to better understand consequences towards climate changes and anthropogenic activities.

Teaching

Seminars with divided work amongst the students and oral PowerPoint presentations. Lectures and calculation assignments. Field course of minimum 1 week in the autumn semester. The students have to pay a field course fee of 150 NOK per day.

Students must have approved participation in two semesters, including one field course.

This course will only be given if there is a minimum of three students, which all meet at the first lecture. If not, the course can be called off.

Assessment and grading

Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
