BIO4530 - Regulatory Toxicology

Course content

An introduction to general principles in toxicological risk assessment, both ecotoxicology and human toxicology. The practical use of these principles for protection of the environment and humans will be in focus. The risk assessment principles are well standardised internationally and in the course OECD test protocols and EU's technical guidance system will be elucidated. In the last part of the course the interaction between toxicology and the society will be discussed.

Learning outcomes

The subject is a part of the Master's Degree in toxicology. It is relevant for persons working or planning to use toxicological risk assessment in their work.

Prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge

MNLAB0020 - Introduction to laboratory and field safety, BIO4500 - General Toxicology or equivalent knowledge.

Overlap

5 credits against BIO9530 - Regulatory Toxicology.

Teaching

It is an intensive course divided in two sessions (each 1 week) in April/ May with one or two weeks between. Many lectures will be given by national experts from research institutes.

This subject uses Fronter.

Exam information

The students will be divided in groups wich will prepare and present a lecture in a relevant theme in risk assessment. Final written exam (3 hours).

Assessment and grading

Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .

An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
