Course content

The course will focus on evolutionary biology of microbes – both microeukaryotes like fungi and protists, as well as bacteria. A special emphasis will be on genome evolution of microbes studied through genomics and transcriptomics analyses. Further, bioinformatics analyses of the data will be highlighted. The teaching is based on biweekly literature colloquia where the students present and discuss recent articles within the field. Also essays (in the form of written summaries of articles) will be obligatory.

Learning outcomes

Students gain knowledge about state-of-the-art research within evolutionary biology of microbes , with a special focus on genome evolution of microbes.

Admission

This course is primarily intended for PhD students admitted to a program at a Norwegian University or University College. For registration please contact the student administration office in the Department of Biology .
PhD students from other faculties at UiO and other universities (than Oslo) must in addition apply as a Visiting PhD Student

Prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge

BIO1200 - Biodiversity and BIO2140 - Molecular biology and Biological Methods

Overlap

5 credits against BIO4170 - Recent literature in microbial evolutionary genomics.

Teaching

Colloqia. Two presentations and two essays.

Exam information

Oral exam. The presentations and the essays must be passed to take the final exam.

Assessment and grading

Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the
subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary
examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information
about new examination, see reglement for utsatt og ny eksamen ved MN-fakultetet
and the english version of the examination rules.

We also offer postponed examination after legitimate absence.

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.

Evaluation of this course

Feedback from our students is essential to us in our efforts to ensure and further improve the high quality of our programmes and courses. As a student at the University of Oslo you will therefore be asked to participate in various types of evaluation of our courses, facilities and services. All courses are subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students on a particular course to participate in a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of this course, a so called "periodic evaluation".
