GEO4220 – Depositional environments and biostratigraphy

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

In this course you will gain basic understanding of the major environments of deposition, sediment characterization and stratigraphical principles, mainly bio- and sequence stratigraphy. The practicals will demonstrate different case histories.

Learning outcome

During the course you will:

  • learn the principles of particle formation, erosion, transport and deposition, with particular emphasis on allogenic and autogenic factors.
  • understand the formation and characterization of the main sedimentary facies
  • learn the basics of paleontological analyzes
  • compile paleontological and stratigraphical results, sedimentary logs and well logs and in integrated assessments of depositional environments.
  • be able to perform their own, independent facies analysis.
