BIO4030 – Climate and population processes

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course was offered for the last time in autumn 2005. The course will be partly replaced by BIO4140 Life history and climate, which is offered every autumn semester, starting autumn 2006.

The course consists of three parts:

  • Covers how animals and birds have adapted to alpine and arctic climate and the population dynamical effects of the same adaptation.
  • Effects of climate on ectotherms (mainly terrestrial). What makes insects special. Processes: climatic adaptations and direct vs. indirect effects. Variables: temperature, humidity, UV, seasonality/unpredictability
  • A survey of large scale population ecological responses to climate fluctuations with a focus on historic data.

Learning outcome

To increase and operationalise the students knowledge of basic ecology with special emphasis on the effect of climate.
