Course content

This course will give practical training in solving a signal processing problem, and in turning theory into a practical solution. In this way it is a continuation of the basic course in signal processing. All the problems are related to acoustics in some way and utilize a PC and a sound card. The problems should be solved by an individual or in groups of two. They are quite freely defined and it is possible for the student to define his own topic.

Learning outcomes

You will get hands-on experience with signal processing, acoustics, and software for signal processing. In addition you will learn how to make a project plan, to work according to the plan, and evaluate your own progress relative to the plan. Part of the work is that the student will have to find their own literature. This course will also give training in presentation. In this way the course is a preparation for working with a MSc thesis and in the way projects are executed in real life.

Admission

Students at UiO must apply for courses in StudentWeb.

International applicants, if you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures for international applicants.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements.

Recommended prior knowledge

INF3470 - Digital signalbehandling / INF4470 - Digital signalbehandling. Some of the problems may build on INF2450 - Digital kommunikasjon / UNIK4170 - Digital communications, part I.

Overlap

10 credits against INF4460 - Prosjekt i digital signalbehandling og akustikk.

Teaching

One day of laboratory work per week. There is a small number of lectures in the first weeks of the course (2 hours per week) in order to introduce the problems, give an introduction to acoustics (wave propagation, reverberation, noise, Doppler effect ...), and introduce the concept of a project plan.

Exam information

The course has the following assignments which all of them have to be passed in the same semester:

  • Project plan with an introduction to the problem and definitions of mile stones
  • An overview of relevant literature
  • Presentation of the background of the problem and the status of the field
  • Demonstration at mile stone no 1 defined by the student
  • Demonstration at mile stone no 2 defined by the student
  • Poster
  • Web page
  • Final presentation with demonstration

Assessment and grading

Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .

Course auditor: Luren Yang

An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.

Other information

Note that the first lecture is mandatory.
