Course content
Basic introduction to central functions of communication systems. This includes addressing, routing, flow control, error handling, reliability and synchronization. Example for the use of these functions in today’s communication systems are presented, and more specifically how there are used with different network technologies. Important architecture and protocols are covered.
Learning outcomes
The course will give students a good understanding of basic functions on which modern communication systems are built. It will be a required basis for working in this area.

Formal prerequisites
INF1060 - Introduction to operating systems and data communications /INF103
Recommended prior knowledge
INF1010 - Object oriented programming, INF1020 - Algorithms and data structures /INF110
Overlap
10 credits with INF3190 - Data communications, 9 credits with INF 240, 10 credits with IN 270 and 6 credits with IN-KOM-EVU.
Teaching
2 hours lecture and 2 hours common exercise solving. Additionally will an oracle be available for questions in a terminal room at posted times. Successful delivery of mandatory assignment is required for admission to the exam.
Exam information
Graded marks (A - F) will be handed out based on 2 graded assignments (home work) that account for approximately 20% each, and a final 3 hours written exams that accounts for approximately 60% of the final grade. Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams. All exams must be taken during the same semester. Note: No material is allowed to bring to the exam.

No special exam resources are allowed.
Assessment and grading
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .
Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes
This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Note that the first lecture is mandatory. The subject is regarded equal to INF3190 - Data communications /INF240/IN270 when practicing exam regulations.
