Course content

Basic optical communication, Optical routing, Basic wireless communication, Challenges within IP-routing, Router architecture, Label routing (Multi Protocol Label switching), Unicast and Multicast Routing, Active Networks, Overlay networks, Quality of Service (ao. Diffserv, Intserv, RSVP), Demands from Multimedia applications and possible solutions, Adaption, Challenges using heterogeneous networks, Core vs. Access networks.

Learning outcomes

The goal of the course is that the students have good knowledge about the scientific field routing and protocols in the Internet. Students will also have detailed knowledge within a chosen sub-area within this scientific field.

Prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge

The course builds on INF3190 - Data communications/INF4190 - Data communications/IN270/INF240.

Overlap

6 credits INF-PRI, 9 credits INF-PRI-F

Teaching

Seminar, 3 hours per week, spring. The two first hours is used for student presentations. The last hour is used to teach next week’s theme. Students are assigned to themes as soon as possible after course start.

Exam information

One written part exam counting 20% and one oral exam counting 80% of the grade. All parts must be passed and all parts must be passed in the same semester. General information about the examination.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

The subject is regarded equal to INF-PRI-F when practicing exam regulations.

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
