INF9970 – Research Methods in Computer Science

Course content

In this course we cover the following topics (lectures):

  • Research methods in Computer Science
  • What is a PhD thesis proposal and how to write it?
  • PhD research and thesis (organization and approaches)
  • Publishing, reviewing, etc.
  • Master students (supervision), research proposals/projects (money), and community services
  • Student presentations (research talk, 45 min.)

Learning outcome

You will get an overview of research methods and techniques useful in the phd programme.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

10 hours lecture (given by Vera Goebel and Thomas Plagemann), and
20 hours PhD student presentations (presentation about their research work or PhD thesis proposal)

Examination

All students have to give a presentation (45 min.), submit a research proposal (max. 5 pages), and participate actively in the discussions. The presentations and research proposals will be evaluated to pass this course (no other examination).

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This subject does not offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
