Course content

KJM-MENA4030 introduces master students in chemistry to the art of presenting scientific material to a critical audience. This focus is on on-stage performance as well as developing skills in the use of presentation tools. Other topics include preparation of posters and writing of applications.

Learning outcome

On successful completion of this course you :

  • recognize the impact of the presentation style on the audience with respect to learning outcome, motivation and impression of scientific quality
  • know the basic skills of presenting science to diverse audiences, such as students or senior researchers
  • can identify and are able to avoid traditional pitfalls in oral presentations
  • are familiar with PowerPoint and know how to adapt and implement appropriate tools in a lecture with carefully selected structure, design and information content
  • know the basic skills of poster design
  • are able to write high-quality applications for funding of scientific projects as well as for jobs

Admission

Late registration is manual: If you did not apply for the course in time for main registration, you have to contact the student administration at The Department of Chemistry for late registration.

You have to be a registered student in a master program at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in order to be admitted to KJM-MENA4030.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

You have to be a registered student in a master program at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in order to be admitted to KJM-MENA4030.

Teaching

The course comprises 17 hours of lectures and 11 hours of student presentation and ends with a half-day session.
The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to join, the expedition Office has to be informed by sending an e-mail to ekspedisjonen@kjemi.uio.no or calling 22 85 54 46. If you fail to register as an active student for the course, you will loose the access to the course for the given semester.

Approved presentations are valid for four semesters.

Examination

Throughout the semester students are expected to give a total of 11 minor presentations (oral, poster or application) and a final larger presentation (oral or poster). Passed is based on the approval of at least 10 contributions, which must include the last one.
Approved presentations are valid for 4 semesters.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
