MENA3000 - Functional materials
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
The course is focused on the properties of materials used in modern technology. The topics treated include crystal structures, bonding, and physical properties (electrical, magnetic, optic etc) of materials. Focus is given to the relationship between properties and crystal structure.
The student should gain insight into the structure and properties of a broad spectrum of functional materials.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
One of these:
- Mathematics R1
- Mathematics (S1+S2)
And and in addition one of these:
- Mathematics (R1+R2)
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

10 credits overlap with MENA4000 - Functional materials
The course comprises 36 hours of lectures, 48 hours of group seminars, 4 hours of exam preparations, as well as 2 mandatory reports.
One written midterm exam (1 hour, counting 20 % of final result) in October. Final written exam (4 hours, counting 80 % of final result) in December.
For Ph.D. students, there can be arranged a new examination each semester (only for those who have failed in the ordinary examination).
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The teaching in this course will be cancelled if less than 3 students register within the deadline for the course registration. An approved sett of mandatory reports is valid in four subsequent semesters after it was approved for the first time.
