Course content

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences wants to provide a safe working environment for its students and employees and ensure that education and research conducted at the faculty takes place within safe conditions.
This theme gives you a basic introduction to safe behavior when working in a laboratory or in the field. Especially the following subjects are in focus:

  • Rules and regulations in force
  • Risk assessment
  • Handling chemicals and biological substances
  • Toxicological challenges
  • Using the hazardous chemicals and biological substances` records
  • Protective equipment
  • First aid
  • Fire safety

Learning outcomes

Taking this course you will be able to handle different situations that might occur when you work at the laboratory or in the field. Among other things you will learn:
• Which health, environment and safety regulations you must take into consideration when conducting experiments in the laboratory:

  • What to do to prevent undesirable incidents due to chemicals or biological substances
  • What to do if you should become injured by fire, caustic liquid or suffer injuries to your eyes
  • What basic first aid to use when unconsciousness occurs, plus practical cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • What to do if there is a fire outbreak in the laboratory

Admission

MNLAB0020 is obligatory for new students at the programs:

  • Biology
  • Pharmacy
  • Geosciences; programme options Environmanetal Geology and Geohazards, Geology, Petroleum geology and Petroleum geophysics.
  • Chemistry
  • Molecular Biosciences

The subject is a formal prerequisite for the master introduction subjects and is recommended prior knowledge for subjects with laboratory work with biological or chemical substances at master and ph.d. level.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Teaching includes 6 hours of lectures common for all participants and 3 different grouplessons each of 3 hours duration (first aid, fire safety and laboratory work) in the beginning of each semester. Participation in all parts of the teaching are mandatory. Sickness or other accepted grounds for absenteeism must be documented.

Criteria for access to teaching resources

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, contingent on available capacity.

Exam information

To pass MNLAB0020 the student must have approved participation in all parts of the teaching.

Evaluation of this course

Other information

Attendance is mandatory for all parts of the course and will be registered daily. All students who have been away for the entire course or parts of the course, must take the equivalent next time the course is offered (in the beginning of the subsequent semester). Students with a documented and valid inabilty to attend, are guaranteed a place on the course, while students without valid absence are granted access if there is sufficient space after new Master's students and PhD students have been admitted. Medical certificates can be handed in to MN-studieinfo during their opening hours or be sent to the office by post. Please remember to state which course and for which date the certificate applies to.

Students will not pass the courses that MNLAB0020 is a prerequisite for, or get their Master's degree approved, before MNLAB0020 has been completed and passed.
