Course content

The course will provide an introduction to measurement methods relevant to experimental fluid mechanics. Knowledge of these topics will also be of use for fluid mechanics students involved in modelling. The course will provide an overview of analysis techniques commonly used in experimental work. Weekly exercises will provide reinforcement of the topics discussed in class. A variety of measurement methods and techniques will be presented in order to provide knowledge and understanding of common measurement methods used in research. Lab classes will provide the student with opportunities to apply the topics discussed in class to actual data. Literature which is relevant to the measurement techniques will be discussed in class as well.

Learning outcomes

The goal will be to familiarize the student with common measurement and analysis techniques for experimental fluid mechanics. After completion of the course the student should feel confident in conducting more independent experimental work. The student will leave will knowledge of how to approach various measurements in the lab along with an understanding of how to acquire and process the resultant data.

Admission

To participate in this course you must have an admission to a Ph.D.-programme at a Norwegian University or University College.

If you do not have an admission to the Ph.D.-Programme in Science at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO, you have to apply for hospitantstatus (norwegian text) . For more information, please contact the Department.

Prerequisites

Recommended prior knowledge

MEK1100 - Vector Calculus and MEK3230 - Fluid Mechanics and basic programming/scripting knowledge in Matlab, Python, Fortran, etc.

10 credits against MEK4600 - Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics.

Teaching

4 hours of lectures per week through the whole semester. Three compulsory assignments have to be handed in and approved in addition to an oral presentation.

Exam information

The final exam will consist of a 30 minute oral presentation given by the student to the class. The student will go into further detail on a topic discussed in class, chosen from a list provided by the instructors. Questions from the instructors and the class members will follow the presentation and a letter grade will be given.

Doctoral candidates must deliver one extra obligatory exercise, which must be at an advanced level within the curriculum of the course, or be a theoretical extension of the curriculum of the course, and should preferrably relate the contents of the course to newer research literature. It may be required to give an oral presentation and/or deliver a written report. The exercise must be passed to be allowed to take the final exam.

Language of examination

Students may, on subjects where the language of instruction is Norwegian and the examination form is written exam, ask for the exam paper in Bokmål, Nynorsk or English. Closing date for registering the chosen examination language is September 1st for the fall semester and February 1st for the spring semester.

Assessment and grading

Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in deferred examinations. Deferred examinations are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in deferred examinations.

Students who have failed an exam, who withdraw during an exam, and students who wish to retake an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in deferred exams, but may retake the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
