Course content

The course provides insight on how to formulate a problem into statistical language, how to build a statistical model, how to analyse data and how to validate results. Regession methods (that is emperical determination of relations between variables) and other multivariable statistical techniques are central. In particular linear regression, analysis of variance, design of experiments, logistic regression, survival analysis and simple time-series analysis is treated.

Learning outcomes

The students will become familiar with many important topics in
applied statistics. Teaching will be computer assisted and related to examples. Mathematics is kept at a minimum, while it is expected that the students have a basic knowledge of statistics at the level of STK1000 - Introduction to applied statistics. Use of a software package is integraded into the course. The course is in particular directed towards master and phd students who need knowledge of statistics beyond an introductory course for their thesis work. The students are required to actively take part in practical exercises.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

5 credits with STK2000 - Some central models and methods in statistic/STK3100 - Introduction to generalized linear models, 10 credits with STK3900 - Statistical methods and applications and 9 credits with ST301.

Teaching

Teaching will be given intensively over two separate weeks, each day from 9.15 - 16.00.

Exam information

Depending on the number of students, the exam will be in one of the following four forms:
1.Only written exam
2.Only oral exam
3.A project paper followed by a written exam.
4.A project paper followed by an oral exam/hearing.
For the latter two the project paper and the exam counts equally and the final grade is based on a general impression after the final exam. (The two parts of the exam will not be individually graded.)

What form the exam will take will be announced by the teaching staff within September 15th for the autumn semester and February 15th for the spring semester.

One compulsory assignment has to be approved, before the second week of teaching. Lectures and exercises are given jointly for STK4900 and STK9900, but the compulsory assignment and the exam questions are not the same for the two courses.

Language of examination

Students may, on subjects where the language of instruction is Norwegian and the examination form is written exam, ask for the exam paper in Bokmål, Nynorsk or English. Closing date for registering the chosen examination language is September 1st for the fall semester and February 1st for the spring semester.

Subjects where the language of instruction is English will offer the exam paper in English only.

This rule also applies for subjects where the exam form is dependent on the number of students
and written exam is chosen by the teaching staff.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

An external auditor regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. Deferred examinations for students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams will be arranged at the same time. (These valid reasons has to be documented within given deadlines.)

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
