Course content

The course aims to give students of the University of Oslo a general insight into how a research result can lead to a business idea that is developed until it can be put into practice as a product or service with value for the user.
The course covers topics such as innovation, concept development, marketing, finances, business models, business law, internationalisation, and provides a brief introduction to these.
The course is practice-based and students work extensively in groups with practical tasks and real examples, in addition to receiving theoretical teaching.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain a theoretical and practical introduction to the different aspects of business development. The course gives students an overview of the tools needed to realise an idea. Part of the course includes external guest speakers, who highlight important examples of how knowledge-intensive industry is linked to academic knowledge.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Teaching is carried out over the semester, as follows:
• 2 hours collective teaching in the week with lectures as the form of teaching.
• 2 hours of group teaching in the week, mandatory attandance 3 times.
• 2 mandatory group assignments: group sizes of 3-5. A detailed description is provided at the first lecture. Group assignments are handed in as a part of the exam. Assignments are set during the semester. Students choose some of these assignments, which will be completed and submitted.

Teaching takes place throughout the semester.

Exam information

Grade foundation consists of evaluation of the final submission of all required tasks and 3-hour multiple choice exam. The two assessments represent each 50% of the final grade. Both group assignment and multiple choice exam must taken in the same semester.

Participation in the group requires admission to the course.

Exam resources

No special exam resources are allowed.

Language of examination

The language of examination is Norwegian. You can apply to the administrators of the course to be given the exam text in English. It is possible to submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Students can request an explanation of their grades, and can also appeal against their grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors. Read more about explanations and appeals

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
