ENT4100 - Ideation and Feasibility Studies

Course content

The objective of this course is to make students adept in the process of evaluating new technology based ideas associated with the commercialization of technology. The course is taught in cooperation with the Inven2 (former Birkeland Innovation and Medinnova - technology transfer office for the University of Oslo).

Learning outcomes

During the course, students will develop a working knowledge of what it takes to assess the viability of new technologies.
After completion of the course the student should:

• Have acquired knowledge and terminology about commercializing new technologies, including subprocesses for building the value of the technology to be commercialized, and subprocesses for mobilizing stakeholders necessary to gain support and resources needed in the commercialization process.
• Be able to formulate commercialization strategies in terms of value visions, value propositions and intellectual property, and evaluate the strength of such strategies.
• Be able to perform idea evaluation associated with technology transfer and research based innovation.
• Have developed increased curiosity for research based innovation and the commercialization of new technology, and confidence in their ability to de-mystify technology based ideas
• Have developed increased awareness for the ethics associated with commercialization new technology and the technology`s usefulness in society

Admission

The course is targeted at students in the 2-year Master`s program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Center for Entrepreneurship, University of Oslo.

To attend this course you need to hold a Bachelor’s degree. A limited number of students that are not participating in the MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship program will be enrolled. It is considered particularly relevant for PhD-students. In cases where student applicants are higher than the course’s capacity, priority will be given to students in the Master´s program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification within natural sciences or medicine is required.

Teaching

In the first part of the course students will receive lectures and assignments designed to raise knowledge and awareness about idea evaluation and the commercialization of new technology. In the second and main part of the course, students will each do group evaluations of technology based ideas provided by the Inven2, and write up evaluation reports for those ideas.

Teaching takes place from January - March.

Exam information

The course will be evaluated through portfolio assessment based on two group assignments and one individual assignment. The two group assignments count 30% each and the indivdual assignment counts 40% towards the overall grade. The overall grade will be based on a summative evaluation after all three assignments have been delivered.

Assessment and grading

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation.
