Course content

This course is the last course in your 2-year master’s programme in Environmental and Development Economics. There is no teaching in this course which consists only of the oral exam.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge outcomes:
To test your general knowledge within the field of economics. The committee will asses your ability to participate in an academic discusion about economic topics and problems. Their questions may be taken from the whole field of Economics.

Skills:
You should be able to demonstrate that you are able to orally present key issues within the field of economics. You are expected to demonstrate good analytical ability, show that you master the metodical aspects of the discipline and have a good overview of it.

Admission

Only students who are admitted to the 2-year master’s programme in Environmental and Development Economics and have completed all compulsory and elective courses in the programme (120 ECTS) will be admitted.

The two-step course registration for the oral exam needs to be done the semester you are taking the exam:

1 Registration and semester registration in StudentWeb. The deadline for this is February 1 (spring semester) or September 1 (autumn semester).

2 Written registration for the exam on the “Department's confirmation form”must be handed in at the reception exam (found under the heading Oral examination)

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Teaching

There is no teaching in this course.

Exam information

The oral exam lasts for 45-60 minutes. The exam committee consists of two examiners of whom at least one is an external examiner.You will be given up to 10 minutes to present the main topics of your master’s thesis. The committee may spend up to 15 minutes asking follow-up questions. The remaining time may be used by the examiners to ask questions form the whole field of Economics.
The dates for the exam is announced on the course page. The oral exam is held four times a year up to and including spring semester 2011. The oral exams will take place in June, October, January and March

Exam resources

You are not allowed to bring prepared manuscripts or Power Points for the presentation of your master’s thesis. You may however bring your Master’s thesis.

Language of examination

The examination will be in either English or Norwegian. You choose examination language when you sign up for the oral exam on the Department's confirmation form (found under the heading Oral examination)

Assessment and grading

The result of the oral exam is published in Student Web and will be posted on the board on the 12th floor, on the same day as the oral exam takes place.

Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Explanations and appeals

You can only file a formal complaint about exam procedures. The complaint should be filed right after the oral exam.

Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes

You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .

Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes

A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
