Course content
In the master’s thesis the student has to write about an economic topic. Some kind of original contribution is required. The topic of the thesis may be any problem that can fruitfully be analyzed with economic theories or methods. The size of the thesis should correspond to 1 term, i.e. 5 months full-time work. Supervision is compulsory.
Students admitted to the 5-year master's programme in 2006 or later and students admitted to one of the 2-year master's programmes in 2009 or later:
Will get a supervisor appointed in their 8th /2nd semester, hand in their project plan in the 9th/3rd semester, write their thesis in the 10th/4th semster. More information about this will be given underneath.

Knowledge outcomes
The student will acquire in depth knowledge of the specific problem chosen for the thesis, and learn to use the required methods.
Skills
The student should learn to write clearly about economic issues. The student should learn to seek information about a topic and make independent judgments when using relevant data, theories and available literature. The student should also learn to plan and complete a large project.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisites
Students must be admitted to one of the master's programmes at the Department of Economics.
Recommended prior knowledge
It is advisable that the students have taken all the courses in their the Master's program before starting to write the Master's thesis.
Teaching
Individual academic supervision.
Academic supervision is compulsory for students who writes their Master's thesis in Economics. Starting from the Atumn 2009 all students will get supervisors appointed in their 8th or 2nd semseter of their master's programmes.:

Exam information
This course is passed when you get your master's thesis approved
Information for students who started the 5-year master's programme Autumn 2005 or before and students who started their 2-year master's programme Spring 2009 or before:
During the academic year there are theree deadlins for submitting your master's thesis.
Two deadlines in the spring semester; in February and May. And one deadline in September for the autumn semester.
The students sign up for the exam on Studentweb by the ordinary deadlines(Spring: 1 February and Autumn: 1 September). When registering on Student web please note that you get two options; one mid-term exam (For the February deadline) and one Spring (For May) or Autumn (for November). Please sign up for the deadline that you are planning to meet.

We recomend that students hand in their theis in May in their 10th or 4th semester.
In order to be able to submitt your master's thesis your project plan must have been approved. The deadline for submitting the project plan is 15 October each year. If you are unable to meet this deadline, the next deadlines for the project plan are: 15 May for submission in September and 15 October for submission in February
Assessment and grading
Students are awarded either a passing or a failing grade. Read more about the grading system .
