PSY2302 - Brain and cognition

Course content
The following themes are addressed:
- Lifespan development and change of the brain and cognitive functions.
- Neurobiological basis of core cognitive functions in man.
- Brain imaging methods used in cognitive neuroscience research.
- Examples of how disease may affect brain and cognition.
Learning outcomes
- Basic level knowledge of memory, attention, language and intelligence in relation to brain development and lifespan changes.
- Understanding the principles of methods for studying cerebral characteristics, e.g. brain activity, linked to cognitive functions.
- Basic level knowledge of select laboratory methods and analyses used in cognitive neuroscience research.
- You should be able to read a research report on brain-cognitive function relationships and evaluate critically the information value of the conclusions drawn and methods used.
Admission
If there are more applicants than available places, the students
that has this course as an obligatory course in their education plan will be preferred. Read more here (only in Norwegian)
The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisites
PSY1000 - Innføring i generell psykologi og PSY1010 - Forskningsmetode I.
Recommended prior knowledge
PSY2300 - Innføring i kognitiv psykologi or an equivalent course.
Teaching
24 hours of teaching, predominantly in the form of lectures, but some laboratory demonstrations are also included.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Exam information
3 hours supervised written examination. The exam will be graded from A to E for passes and F for fail.

No special exam resources are allowed.

Assessment and grading
Examination results will be published in Studentweb within three weeks after the day of examination. If the examination results are delayed, a message with the new deadline will be posted on the semesterpages to the course in question.
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

Justification of examination results and appeals
Students can request an explanation of their grades, and can also appeal against their grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors. Read more about explanations and appeals
Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes
You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .
Withdrawing from exams and limits on re-takes
A student can sit for this exam up to 3 times. If a student wishes to withdraw from the exam, s/he must do this in StudentWeb at least two weeks prior to the first day of the exam. Failure to do so will be counted as one of the three opportunities to sit for the exam.
Exam options for students with special needs
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
Evaluation of this course

PSY2302 is mandatory for students in the bachelorprogram in psychology who have chosen cognitive psychology as their field of study.
