Course content

This course is offered as a voluntary component of the Research program and the Ph.D. program at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo.

The effective class time spans seven days including lectures and exercises in conceptually analyzing psychological constructs, estimating parameters in construct measurement models and interpreting results with reference to their construct representations.

Learning outcomes

Classical measurement theory:
The concept of measurement, systematic and random measurement errors, definition, estimation and relevance of different types of reliability, in particular,
the assumptions, purpose, relevance and estimations of Cronbach’s coefficient alpha, and definition, assessment and relevance of different types of validity.

Conceptual fundament for measurement:
“The latent variable paradigm” Domain definition. Domain content, overlapping and interchanging item content.Domain sampling approach.

Domain illustrations:
One-facet and multifacet measurement designs.
Data-analytic models for internal domain studies

Internal consistency reliability:
Interpreting outputs from the Reliability analysis program (Scale) of the SPSS software.

Introduction to generalizability theory:
Basic concepts, designs and estimations of parameters in one- and multi-facet universes. Generalizability - and Decision - studies. Introduction to the program GENOVA to estimate variance components in different generalizability models.

Confirmatory factor analysis
Estimation and testing of confirmatory factor models
