Course content
The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the challenges from international terrorism and internarional military stability operations. These challenges have become the dominant element in the thinking about international security, and also how the define their security interests and prioritize their resources.
These challenges also challenge the traditional theoretical thinking about security, including the question of who are the actors. The struggle against terrorism and insurgencies also involved other means besides the military ones, and at the same time involve the political opinions in various in other ways than traditional security, because legitimicy is very important. Instutions and alliances have also changed at the result of these new threats. These changes are the theme of this course.).
Learning outcomes
As an introduction the relevance of alternative theories to discuss the new occurrencies will be discussed. The course will thereafter give you an introduction to what international terrorism and insurgencies are, It will also discuss the various ways these challenges are met.
An introduction to the change of the main international institutions, NATO, EU and UN, and how institutions work into order to cope with the new security challenges are also given. The various means at the disposal of the international society will also be discussed. Civil-military cooperation is an important aspect here. Different countries have various agendas when taken part in the struggles against international terrorism and insurgencies.
The aim of the teaching is to give an understanding both of the cause of terrorism and insurgencies and the thinking about how these threats are to be met. In addition the student will get an overview of the different institutions and how they work to cope with these threat.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.
Prerequisites
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.
Teaching
The teaching will be in the form of lectures.
Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Exam information
A four hour written exam.
Exam resources
No special exam resources are allowed.
Language of examination
It is generally possible to submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Assessment and grading
Course grades are awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. Read more about the grading system .

A student may appeal against an awarded grade and/or file a formal complaint about exam procedures.
Possibility of make-up exams and re-takes
You can usually resit an exam, but the conditions depend on whether you had a valid reason for absence from the regular exam. Read more about resitting an exam .
Exam options for students with special needs
Students may use a dictionary during the exam. The dictionary is to be handed in to the reception at the Department of Political Science (seventh floor, Eilert Sundts hus) at the latest two days before the day of the exam.
Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
