Exam questions STV 2310 Politics and Development  Spring 2013

Answer three of the following five questions:

1) Discuss with references to the course literature (including Migdal, Sidel and So) the following claim: "Most local governments in Asia are predatory, and controlled by local elites."

2) Discuss and exemplify with references to the course literature how cleavages in society can function both as a basis for and product of political mobilisation.

3) Discuss with references to the course literature the differences between the new social movements in Latin America and the new social movements in Europe; account thereafter for the relations between the various Latin American social movements, on the one hand, and the political parties and the state, on the other.

4) Discuss on the basis of Butenschön and Joseph the ways in which the politics of citizenship and the constitution of the demos represent central dilemmas of democratisation in the Middle East and North Africa.

5) Discuss with references to the course literature the character as well as the strengths and shortcomings of the third wave of democracy (from the late 1970's) in the Global South.
