Course content

This course is a component in the second semester of the two-year Master’s Programme in Special Needs Education.

Areas of study include:

Individual and environmental conditions for learning, development, activity and participation related to impairments and/or disabilities in

  • Sensory functions (vision and hearing)
  • Movement related functions and specific health conditions
  • Cognition
  • Speech and language
  • Reading and numeracy
  • Psychosocial conditions

Learning outcomes

  • Understanding the complexity of learning conditions with a focus on the interaction between context and individual conditions.
  • Acquired skills in planning, implementing, adapting and evaluating education plans for learners with disabilities.
  • Understanding principles of observation and assessment of environment, communication, development and learning outcomes.

Admission

The course is obligatory for students registered on the Master of Philosophy in Special Needs Education Programme. Other students who fulfil the admission requirements can also apply to attend this course. Priority will be given to students formally accepted onto the Master’s Programme.

The examination in this course is not available for external candidates. Only students admitted to the course may sit for the examination.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisites

1. A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent

2. Knowledge of English documented by one of the following or equivalent:

  • a. Basic English from Upper Secondary School (videregående), minimum grade 4 (Norwegian grading system)
  • b. TOEFL examination with a minimum score of 550 (213 computer-based, 80 internet-based)
  • c. IELTS examination with a minimum score of band 6


3. For students formally accepted onto the Master’s Programme motivation, research interests and professional practice will also be taken into consideration

Obligatory activities

Observation and assessment based on video recordings

Teaching takes place throughout the semester.

No special exam resources are allowed.

Assessment and grading

Individual written term paper to be delivered in the middle of the 2nd semester.

Grades: A, B, C, D, E and F(fail)

Students can request an explanation of their grades, and can also appeal against their grades or make a complaint about formal examination errors. Read more about explanations and appeals

Exam options for students with special needs

Students may apply for access to alternative exam resources or exam forms on the basis of chronic illness and/or special needs that create a marked disadvantage to other students in the exam situation. Mothers who are breastfeeding may apply for extra time to complete the exam.
