About the programme

The University of Oslo is the only place in Norway that can offer postgraduate studies that combine language, area studies and an academic discipline within Asian and African studies. This is a two-year programme, in which the first part provides the basis for the independent work with the master's thesis.

A master's degree within the Programme for Asian and African Studies offers the opportunity to continue working with the area and language of your programme option on bachelor's level. You may concentrate on the topic that interests you most, within a broad selection of topics on culture or society. Each programme option consists of a number of compulsory courses aimed to provide the theoretical and methodological framework for the master's thesis. In addition, it is possible to choose elective courses that may be drawn from other departments of the University of Oslo and/or other institutions in Norway or internationally. The courses must be relevant and should be selected on the advice of your teacher.

Most of the programme options build on language competence acquired during your undergraduate studies. The independent work on the masters' thesis within this type of programme option should be based on sources in that language. If your programme option is primarily based on an 80-group in culture and/or society, we also recommend that you use sources in the original language of that culture or society. The choice of topic for your master's thesis is your own, but approval from your teacher/supervisor is required since your collection of source materials and the writing of the thesis are supervised by teachers within the relevant subject(s).
